Voncille Buchanan Obituary

In Loving Memory

Voncille Buchanan was born on October 8th, 1948 in Cortelyou, Alabama to the proud parents of Dorsey and Annie Mae Norwood, who both preceded her in death.  She peacefully went on to Glory on Thursday May 14th, 2020 at 6:55am at Amita St. Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates, IL.

Voncille and her family, including her 4 younger brothers Larry, Raymond, Clifton and John Wayne, had some hard times growing up in Alabama.  In spite of these hard times, they never knew a hungry day.  Their household was one of unyielding, uncompromising faith and love. As both of their parents worked hard every day, that left Voncille home to look after her brothers, and that she did. She was like a second mother to them, looking after them through thick and thin.  According to her brothers, she was their cheerleader and disciplinarian, and was never afraid to get after them if they needed it (accept for maybe Raymond).  The cheerleader part continued into their adult lives.

Voncille and her family moved from Alabama to Medina, Ohio, where she attended Medina High School.  She was widely considered one of the best atheletes, competing in track and field.  While at Medina High School, she met Tommy Buchanan, whom she went on to date and eventually marry.  Tommy preceded her in death.  Voncille and Tommy had two sons while in Ohio, Darin and Gregory.  After a job transfer, they moved to Schaumburg, IL, then to Hoffman Estates, IL, where they had another son, Jonathan.

Voncille never forgot where she came from or her upbringing in the church, and that unyielding, uncompromising faith.  After a trip to Alabama, she came home and was different.  There was a glow about her, a radiance, a spark.  She had accepted Christ in her life as her personal savior and never looked back. She became a warrior for Christ for the rest of her life and fiercely believed in the power of prayer.   That spark lit a fire under her entire family from her husband, to her kids, to her brothers and some of her friends.

To some she was a daughter, to some she was a sister, to some she was a wife, to some she was an aunt, to some she was a mother-in-law, to some she was a cousin, to some a good friend, and to some a mother.  To all, and most importantly, she was a child of God.

She leaves to cherish her memory, children:  Darin Buchanan, Lake In The Hills, IL, Gregory (Melissa) Buchanan, Huntley, IL, and Jonathan Buchanan, South Milwaukee, WI. Four brothers:  Larry (Cecelia) Norwood, Port St. Lucie, FL, Raymond (Weda) Norwood, Akron, OH, Clifton (Theresa) Norwood, Medina, OH, and John Norwood, Dallas, TX.  Aunt: Rosetta Powell, Birmingham, AL; 6 grandkids (her heart) and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

“Well done, thy good and faithful servant!”
