Rolf Beissner Obituary

Rolf H. Beissner age 85, of Algonquin, Illinois passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024 in Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital in McHenry, Illinois. He was born in Hildesheim, Germany on May 30, 1938 to Carl and Margaretha Beissner (Poggensieg).

Rolf immigrated to the United States in 1962.  It was always his dream to travel to the U.S., “the land of opportunity”.  So, at just 24 years old, he managed to save enough money to buy a ticket on a small freightliner that was bound for New York.  He boarded the ship with a small suitcase in hand, only $30 in his wallet, and a limited grasp of the English language.  The voyage took 11 days, most of which was in hurricane-like weather.  However, as the ship neared New York harbor, the weather became calm and the water surface like glass. He was so happy and thankful to have hard ground under his feet as he stepped off the ship in NYC.

Rolf had a sponsor in the U.S. who managed to get him a job in Chicago working at O’Hare airport.  So, he had to take a train from NYC to Chicago where he worked in a bar and restaurant inside one of the airport terminals.  Not only did this job allow him to earn some money and sharpen his English language skills by interacting with daily passengers, but it also introduced him to the idea of one day owning his own restaurant business.

The money Rolf was able to save from this first job in America allowed him to buy a plane ticket for Sigrid, his girlfriend, whom he left back in Germany. They reunited in Chicago and two years later they would both travel back to Germany to get married among family and friends in August 1965.

Rolf considered himself an entrepreneur.  After starting a family and moving to Schaumburg, IL, he opened the Ratzkeller, a german style restaurant in Lake Zurich, IL which tragically burned down.  Years later, after watching his two sons, Marcus and Chris, grow into teenagers, he decided to try again and proudly rented a building in Cary, IL and opened La Maisonnette , a French style restaurant which he would later turn into a more traditional American style restaurant called Café Continental several years later.

When he was not working in the restaurants, Rolf enjoyed spending time outdoors.  Hunting and fishing were a favorite past time of his.  He also loved to watch soccer.  Rarely would he miss his favorite team, Bayern Munich, play a match.

A few years into retirement, Rolf took on the role of caregiver to Sigrid as she battled Alzheimer’s.  Hardly a day would go by when he was not by her side during her journey until she finally succumbed to the disease in August 2011.  He lived out his remaining years living in the same house in Algonquin and spending quality time with his sons.

Rolf is survived by his two sons, Marcus (Amy) Beissner and Christopher Beissner.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sigrid (Abend) Beissner, sister, Margrit Boelsing, sister, Renate Kester, and brother, Hardy Beissner. They are once again all reunited in God’s holy kingdom.

Cremation rites were held privately.
