Rita J. Erickson (Knepper), age 82, of Lake in the Hills and formerly of Bartlett passed away on February 24, 2024 peacefully in her sleep. She was born in St. Louis, Missouri on May 15, 1941 the daughter of Raymond and Helen (Archer) Knepper. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her adored husband, William “Larry” Erickson, her joyful sister, Shirley “Shirl” (the late Robert) Hauser and her caring life partner, Ken Bredemeier.
Rita is survived by her loving children, David (Mary) Erickson, Matthew (Deborah) Erickson and Laura (James) Gaszynski; her spirited, fun-loving grandchildren, Zachary, Sydney, Hannah, Natalie, Nicholas, Sarah, Hadley, and Ethan; aunt and great-aunt of many. Rita was also the proud “parent” of 17 exchange students from around the world whose fond memories brought her smiles until the end.
Rita served many years as a science teacher to middle and high school students. She was a dedicated member of Immanuel United Church of Christ in Bartlett and then the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake. She was always very active in church as a volunteer and leader. She was exceptionally passionate about the Outreach Ministry, Re-Member, and Women's Fellowship.
Rita enjoyed travel, cruising the USA with family in a classic station wagon or jetting off to Europe to visit her “children” and the historical sites. She took great pride in visiting all 50 states and 11 different countries.
The Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, March 24 at the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake, 461 Pierson Street, Crystal Lake, Illinois with visitation at 1:00 PM and Service at 2:00 PM. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake, the Alzheimer's Association or the American Heart Association.
