Linda Rivera Obituary

Linda Sue Rivera (Daugherty) age 70, of Chicago passed away at her home on April 3, 2021. She was born in Herrin, Illinois on May 25, 1950 the daughter of Eddie and La Vera (Lewis) Daugherty.

Linda will be dearly missed by her loving children, Virgil Rivera, Lisa Rivera (Rick Boerman) and Tina (Mas) Smith; devoted grandmother to Zachery, Jasmine, Austin, Madelyn and Sam; dear great- grandmother to Kenzley; her siblings, Janice Baker, Eddie (Bridgette) Daugherty, Cathy (John) Affrunti, Brian Daugherty, David Daugherty, cherished sister-in-law to Dolly Daugherty and Chuck Fagiano; lifelong best friend to Vicki Dale. Beloved aunt of 23 nieces and nephews and 35 great-nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, Eddie and La Vera Daugherty, and siblings Bobby (Maria) Daugherty and Shelia K. Bethel.

As a child, if you asked Linda what she wanted to be when she grew up she would answer, “I want to be a mom.” In 1971 Linda met and married Frank Rivera. They became the proud parents to Virgil, Lisa and Tina. Though Linda and Frank’s marriage ended, they remained dear friends throughout her life.

Linda was a single mother. She was eternally grateful for the support she received from her family in raising her children, especially her parents. With their support, Linda was able to return to school and earn an Associates in Arts degree from Wright College.  While attending classes at Wright, Linda began working in their Computer Support lab in 1983. Her love of anything “Wright College” endured beyond her retirement in 2010.  Linda enjoyed helping others. She was a Samaritan to those in need.  She welcomed many friends and family to stay with her over the years.

Despite the fact that Linda didn’t like the sun or swimming, she didn’t let that stop her from taking her kids to the lake on hot summer days.  Throughout her life, as a mother and grandmother, she put her family first.

Her grandkids enjoyed going to Grandma’s house and getting all the treats their parents would say no to, especially pop and candy. They enjoyed going to work with her and playing hide and seek in the computer lab. Aside from her kids and grandkids, Linda enjoyed crocheting, reading and writing poetry, gazing at the stars and moon, and playing poker with her family.  Linda was passionate about tracing her family’s ancestry.  She will be dearly missed by her friends and family. Linda’s legacy of giving to those in need, will live on through those that know her best!
