Karen Marie Aagaard age 81, of Algonquin, Illinois passed away in the comfort of her home on May 29, 2024. She was born in Vejerslev, Denmark on May 27, 1943 the daughter of Johannes and Helga (Kjeldgaard) Glintborg.
Karen was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was extremely selfless and she prioritized other’s needs before her own. In fact, nearly every job she had revolved around helping people. She was a hard worker, at the age of 12, she began working at a nursing home in Denmark. Karen later served as a housekeeper when she first moved to the USA. A few years later, she continued her career as a nursing assistant for Sherman Home Care. While there, her generous nature became even more apparent as she helped those who lacked the strength to endure their own daily tasks. Lastly, Karen worked in a horticultural distribution warehouse with many of her friends.
Not only was Karen a caregiver at work, but at home as well. Immediately after she “retired”, she became a full-time babysitter, as she watched over her grandchildren and close family friends. She taught her children and grandchildren to be strong, independent, selfless, smart, and respectful - just like her!
Karen had many other passions aside from caregiving. When she was growing up, she was raised on a farm in Denmark. Her and her siblings had countless chores with maintaining crops and caring for animals. This is where Karen developed her hard working spirit and her roots for becoming an avid gardener! Dancing was her favorite pastime growing up. She loved listening to the radio and singing and dancing as her family would play the accordion and piano.
Karen was an active member of the Danish American Athletic Club and volunteered her time helping with bazaars, bingo and other events. At the DAAC, she did gymnastics and folk dancing and took her children weekly for them to partake in gymnastics, no matter the weather. When Karen wasn’t helping at the DAAC, she enjoyed completing Danish crossword puzzles, sudoku, and spider solitaire. She loved the feeling of freedom that she got when she had a steering wheel in hand and a gas pedal under her feet! Her other hobbies included crocheting, cross stitching, cooking, and baking. She was always willing to share these hobbies with others, and she was lovingly known as the best cook and baker around among her family and friends!
Karen is survived by her beloved husband, Finn Aagaard, her loving sons, Klaus (Patti) Aagaard and Karsten (JaNeen) Aagaard; her cherished grandchildren, Kristin (Maxx) Aagaard, Erin Aagaard, Paige Aagaard and Torben Aagaard; her siblings, Hans Jorgen (Ragna) Glintborg and Anton (Birte) Glintborg.
Karen is preceded in death by her parents, Johannes and Helga Glintborg and sister Else (Carl) Kristensen.
She will always be missed, but she will never be forgotten. Her spirit will live through everyone who loves her.
A Memorial Visitation for Karen will be held on Friday, June 28, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Willow Funeral Home & Cremation Care 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one half mile east of Randall Rd.) Algonquin/Lake in the Hills.
