John Colin Gerber age 81, of Cary, IL and formerly of Algonquin, IL passed away at JourneyCare in Barrington, IL on March 15, 2023 with his loving family at his side. He was born on June 26, 1941 in Rockford, IL the son of Reed and Lois (Colin) Gerber.
He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah (Ramp) Gerber of nearly 48 years, his daughter, Kimberly (Joseph) McCamant; his grandson, Sean McCamant; his sister, Andrea Pripps; his, sisters-in-law, Barbara Gerber and Karen Farahnik; his brother-in-law, Sai Farahnik. He is also survived by several nephews, nieces, cousins and loved ones.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his brother, James Gerber.
John proudly served as a Military Police Officer for the U.S. Airforce immediately upon his high school graduation. After his service John was a professional pilot for several years followed by a robust career as an entrepreneur and business owner in the commercial roofing industry.
In addition to being a devoted husband, father and grandfather, John was an enthusiastic adventurer! He was a Master Scuba diver and instructor, flight instructor, motorcycle and snowmobile enthusiast, guitarist, ham radio operator, storyteller, craftsman, and sailor, which would become one of his greatest passions.
Following his professional career, he and wife Deborah retired onboard their sailing vessel, Sea Witch, to the Caribbean where they spent 9 years of paradise including living in the beautiful Country of Grenada.
John’s adventures brought many beloved friends into his and Deborah’s lives and created memories cherished by all. His infectious smile, booming voice, easy going way and passion for life will be missed by all those who were blessed to have known him.
Cremation rites were held privately. A private "Celebration of Life" will be held.
