Joel F. Messina, age 71, of Sleepy Hollow, Illinois and formerly of Deer Park, Illinois passed away on December 5, 2023, after a four-year battle with Lewy body dementia. Joel was born to Frank P. and Dolores H. (Buriegi) Messina, on July 10, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois. He was a talented artist who turned his passion into a successful graphic design firm. Working alongside his twin brother Tony, they received many accolades throughout their 30 years in business. Joel was an avid car enthusiast with a special appreciation for German engineering. He took great pride in his 1996 Porsche 911, a car he loved to drive and meticulously cared for. Joel was a wonderful provider for his family—hardworking and hands on, spending hours doing projects himself to make their house a beautiful home. A loving dad with an infectious laugh, he was welcoming, kindhearted and generous to everyone he met. While Joel left us far too soon, we are comforted by the thought that he is at peace and free from an awful disease. He will be missed terribly by those who knew and loved him. Joel is survived by his daughters, Melissa (Gary) Johnson and Nicole (Regis) Coudrier; his grandchildren, Jayce, Camden, Enzo and Izola; his father, Frank; his brother, Tony; his nephew, Todd McGinnis; nieces, Lisa McGinnis and Megan (Dexter) Tortoriello; and extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dolores; sister, Della (Ron) McGinnis; and brother, Frank. A memorial visitation will be held at Willow Funeral Home & Cremation Care 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one half mile east of Randall Rd.) Algonquin, Illinois 60102 on Saturday, December 16, 2023, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., along with a prayer service and eulogies to begin at 12:00 p.m. Private interment St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association in Joel’s name to support critical research for dementia that could help end this disease.
