Joan M. Boland

Joan “Joanie” Boland (Kopniewski) age 79, of Lake in the Hills, passed away at home on March 22, 2023 with her loving family at her side. She was born in Chicago, Illinois on April 6, 1943 to Steven and Helen Kopniewski.

Joan was an excellent cook and loved cooking for her family.  Her baking talents were loved by all.  She is best known for her delicious carrot cake which was enjoyed by many over the years.  She also was a talented cake decorator that included wedding cakes and was a very talented craft painter and calligrapher. 

Many of us that were lucky to receive one of her crafts, painted cards or ornaments will cherish them forever.  Joan, our dear mom will be missed, but she will no longer suffer from her long battle with COPD.  Breathe easy Mom. 

Joan is survived by her loving children, Lora (Glen) Pepel, Karyn (Kevin) Vandewalker and Jeanine Goldstein; her granddaughter Sydney Pepel; her grandsons Logan Pepel, Matthew Vandewalker (Lauren), Zachary Vandewalker, Jordan Goldstein, Lucas Goldstein and Griffin Goldstein, her great-grandchildren Aubree and Brayden Vandewalker, her sister, Shirley Coen, niece, Caitlyn and her daughter, Layla, Bill and Gail Boland, Sue and Rich Gross, and Ellen and Jim Piersol along with many nieces & nephews and her dog "Tootsie".

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Richard "Pop" Boland, her cherished son, Michael R. Boland, her brother, Steve Kopniewski, her brother-in-law, Rob Coen, and her nephew, Steve Gross.

Cremation rites were accorded privately.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM, there will be a time of Reflection at 5:00 PM, where friends and neighbors are welcome to share their memories of Joan and Celebrate her life at Willow Funeral Home & Cremation Care 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one half mile east of Randall Rd.) Algonquin/Lake in the Hills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the family would be greatly appreciated.
