Fred B. Ekstrom, 92 of Lake In The Hills passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family June 26, 2026. Born in Chicago, December 25, 1933 to the late Fred and Catherine Ekstrom. Beloved husband of Nancy for 71 years; devoted, father of Fred (Denise) Ekstrom, Terry (Chris) Ekstrom, Deb (Bob Thompson) Kahoun and Cindi (Kurt) Neiweem; loving grandfather of Heidi Weis, Hollie (Rob) Savage, Heather (Mike) Thomas, Hayley (Louis) VonPatterson, Christopher (Nicole) Ekstrom, Matt (Tiffany) Ekstrom, Nicki (Aubrey) Ekstrom, Colin Kahoun, Blake (Patience Sprow) Kahoun, Tina Neiweem, Kurt (Katia) Neiweem Jr. and Lucas Neiweem; caring great grandfather to 19 great grandchildren; fond brother of Lucie (late Dave) Patterson; John (late Gerry) Ekstrom; late Bill (Carole) Ekstrom and Cathy (late Vic) Stateman.
Fred Ekstrom spent his growing up years in Bridgeview, Illinois, where he met the love of his life at a football game and would go on to spend the next 74 years creating a beautiful life and family. He bravely served in The United States Army as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne. Fred moved his young family to Lake In The Hills in 1961, and in 1971 he completed building their home where they have resided ever since. Fred loved to spend time on the water and take the family RVing in their early years. He was an avid sailor; sailing on Lake Michigan and in the Florida Keys. Fred also spent his time restoring a 1933 Ford truck, with which he had won many awards. Fred was also a very devoted worker, he is a lifetime member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 and worked for Material Service in Algonquin and Dundee Illinois for 38 years. Above all else, Fred enjoyed spending time with his family. He is greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
A visitation will be held to honor Fred Monday, July 6, 2026 from 4 PM to 8 PM at Willow Funeral Home. A funeral service will be Tuesday, July 7, 2026 at 11 AM at the Congregational Church of Algonquin 109 Washington St., Algonquin, IL 60102. Friends may meet us at the church 15 minutes prior to the service.
