Edward Wolowiec, longtime owner and founder of Port Edward, was born in Chicago, became a lifelong resident of Algonquin, Illinois where he died peacefully at his home at age 92 on Saturday, December 10, 2022. Ed passed away just a few months after his beloved Lisa Freese. Ed is survived by his sister Dolores Kloss and nieces Denise Iwata (Brian Iwata), Sandi Jacobson (David), Karen Ventura (Mike), and Susan Kloss. Ed’s brother Alwin’s children are Susan Render, Karen and Greg Wolowiec, Chris Wolowiec and Marcia Emrick. He also is survived by the many nephews, nieces, grand nephews, grandnieces and great grand nephews and nieces. Ed was preceded in death by his parents Stanley and Antoinette and his brother Alvin.
Ed graduated Chicago’s Holy Trinity High School in 1949 and then earned his teaching certificate in music at The Vander Cook College of Music. Ed became the music teacher at Wooddale High School after his college graduation. Ed left teaching to become a partner of the Anchor Lounge in 1960 and in 1964 bought out his partner and opened Port Edward in the same location in 1964. Ed was very proud that his restaurant continues to go strong and will remain open now that it is in its 58th year!
Ed was very active and a generous philanthropist in Algonquin. He supported many charities and organizations, and he will be dearly missed by his friends, family and the community. Ed was also a proud U.S. Army Veteran, Chair of the Illinois Restaurant Association, Founder of the McHenry County Chapter of The Restaurant Association, longtime Rotarian, member of the Lion and the Elgin Tourism Bureau.
Visitation for Edward will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Willow Funeral Home 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one half mile east of Randall Rd.) Algonquin, where funeral services will be held on Thursday morning, December 15, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor William Yonker officiating, at the Willow Funeral Home chapel.
Interment with Military Honors will be held at Algonquin Cemetery. A memorial luncheon will follow the cemetery service at Port Edward Restaurant, 20 W. Algonquin Rd., Algonquin.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee or to the Algonquin - LITH Food Pantry, Lake in the Hills, Illionois.
