Ed Kilcullen age 78, of DeKalb, Illinois passed away on December 3, 2024, in the comfort of his home under St. Croix Hospice care with his loving family at his side. He was born in Des Plaines, Illinois on January 5, 1946, the son of John and Irene (Mueller) Kilcullen.
He was a proud Veteran of the United States Coast Guard, serving as Quartermaster (QM2) on the USCGC Mackinaw, keeping channels and harbors open to navigation in the Great Lakes, breaking ice for iron ore carriers, hauling Christmas trees every year from up North down to the lower part of Lake Michigan, during the summer days they patrolled the waters for any ship in distress, they also patrolled the Chicago-Mackinaw Race, watching for any sailboats in distress. He retired from the Village of Roselle in 2006 serving as Street Superintendent for 20 plus years. In his spare time, Ed loved spending time with his family, watching his grandchildren’s many different sporting events, cheerleading competitions and horse shows. He loved and took pride in caring for his yard. He enjoyed watching his wife’s beloved Chicago Cubs, his favorite the Chicago White Sox and the one team the two could agree on the Chicago Blackhawks. Chances are he always had a sudoku puzzle going, most likely with a few whiteout marks on it.
Ed is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sharon (Omachel) Kilcullen; his sons, Edward W. (Cindy) Kilcullen, Kenneth M. (Kelly) Kilcullen and Vince T. (Emily) Kilcullen; his 10 grandchildren; his 4 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, Thomas, Bill (Mary), Betty (Bob), Fred and Shirley.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John, his sister, Ellen and his brother-in-law, Bill.
A memorial visitation for Ed will be held on Sunday, January 5, 2025 from 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM, along with an afternoon service and Military Honors to begin at 1:00 PM all at Willow Funeral Home & Cremation Care 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one half mile east of Randall Rd.) Algonquin/Lake in the Hills.
