Doris E. Smiley (Gray) age 81, of Lake in the Hills, Illinois passed away on June 13, 2022. She was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin on October 29, 1940, to Abe and Myrtle Gray (Sugden). Doris had one sister, Dorothy, four brothers, Maynard, Kenneth, Darrell & Lawrence.
She is survived by her children, Kathy DeRoeck, Karen (Scott) Ihrke and Jim (Diane) Smiley; her grandchildren, Dillon (Michelle), Amber (Steve), Brittney (Jeff), Bradley, Bryon (Ashley), Shelley, Darren (Rachel) and Alyssa; her great-grandchildren, Briell, Layla, Gage, Payton Marie, Jeffery, McKayla, Easton, Bryson, and Novalee.
In addition to her parents, Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Albert J. Smiley, her sons, Lawrence & Albert & her brothers & sister.
Doris enjoyed baking, taking care of family & friends, spending time with her family, especially grandchildren & great grandchildren. In addition to this Doris loved garden centers, looking at flowers, and watching birds.
Her hobbies included completing crossword puzzles and word search books as well as watching old and scary movies. However, she also enjoyed Hallmark and romance movies.
Doris’s accomplishments include going back into the working world after Albert passed away in 1992. She was an independent person who worked for thirty years and at more than one job at a time. Later in Doris’s working career she attained a culinary certificate and worked in a café where everyone loved her. Many asked where she was when absent and even went to the extra effort of giving her gift cards for excellent service.
Doris was truly loved by all. Family, animals, customers, neighbors and even the care givers in the last days of her life.
Visitation will be held on Friday, June 17, 2022 from 9:00 AM until time of an 11:30 AM funeral service at Willow Funeral Home 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one half mile east of Randall Rd.) Algonquin.
Interment will follow at Crystal Lake Memorial Park.
