Debra K. Nelson, age 70, of Algonquin, IL, passed away at home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. She was born on November 15, 1954, to the late Eugene and Gladys Balk. Debra grew up in Fulton, IL, and spent much of her adult life residing in Lincolnshire, IL and Spring Grove, IL.
Debra worked as a floral designer for many years. She often shared her talents with family and friends, even making flower arrangements for their weddings. She found joy in hosting parties for those close to her, sharing her fresh baked cookies and zucchini bread. She loved animals dearly, particularly her cats Oreo and Brad. Debra was witty and loving; her lively personality will be deeply missed.
She was predeceased by her parents, Eugene Balk and Gladys Balk, her sister, LaVonne Huizenga, her brother-in-law, Jesse Suter, and husband, Terry Nelson.
She is survived by her daughter, Shannon McHugh (Ted), her son, PJ Gluchman (Michelle), granddaughter, Emily Gluchman, her siblings, Kathy Suter and Terry Balk (Donna). She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Purrfect Cat Rescue in Crystal Lake IL, where her beloved cats were adopted from. Donations can be made online at https://www.purrfectcatrescue.com, in person at the animal shelter, or at her Celebration of Life gathering.
