Cornelius J. MacCarthy

Cornelius J. “Con” MacCarthy age 67, of Algonquin, Illinois and formerly of Arlington Heights, Illinois passed away in Barrington, Illinois on June 19, 2022. He was born in Nashville, Tennessee on September 21, 1954 the son of Richard and Marylou (Rawlins) MacCarthy.

Cornelius was the owner and contractor of MacCarthy Brothers’ Roofing Co. in Algonquin, Illinois for 38 years. In addition to roofing, his business grew to include landscaping, snow removal, and painting houses. During that time, he spent 6 years managing Bank Note Farm raising cattle and taking care of thoroughbreds. He recently enjoyed safely transporting children to and from school as a bus driver for Palatine School District 15.

Known as Mr. Pick’ems, the handicapper, Con developed a love of picking out the winning ponies at Arlington Race Course. He also enjoyed cruising the Fox River on his pontoon boat as Captain Con. As an avid fisherman, he nurtured the love of the sport in his daughters and grandchildren. Cornelius was also a devoted servant to Christ serving on many boards and ministries, teaching middle school Sunday school, mentoring confirmation students, and singing in the church choir at the Congregational Church of Algonquin.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Wendy L. (Kay) MacCarthy; his loving daughters, Kathleen (Jerry) Sanders, Constance (Christopher) Wodziak and Cristin (Kristopher) Hanson; his cherished grandchildren, Kyra, Maverick, Autumn, Caroline, Jack, Oliver and Owen; his brothers, Richard MacCarthy and Thomas (Patricia) MacCarthy; his brother-in-law, Patrick O’Donnell; his sister-in-law, Denise Marwig; and many nieces and nephews. 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen O’Gorman, his brother-in-law, Kenneth O’Gorman; his sister, Patricia O’Donnell; brother-in-law Daniel Marwig; and niece, Amie Marwig.

A public visitation will be held on Sunday, June 26, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Willow Funeral Home & Cremation Care 1415 W. Algonquin Rd., (one mile west of Rt. 31) Algonquin.

A family only In State on Monday, June 27, 2022 at 10:30 AM at The Congregational Church of Algonquin, 109 Washington St., Algonquin. Interment Private.
