Alice Ruth McAvoy Obituary

Alice Ruth (Poppelreiter) McAvoy entered this world on Monday, December 31, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois. At age 88, our cherished mother peacefully departed this life at 3:51pm, Wednesday, December 20, 2023, in her Algonquin, Illinois home surrounded by family. Alice Ruth now reunites with her husband, James Elmer McAvoy. For 61 years, Alice and Jim shared unwavering love and devotion to each other and their family.

Some of the things our mother enjoyed throughout her life were baking delicious treats for everyone, be it holiday or no holiday; gardening, with her favorite flowers being peonies and pansies; and watching and listening to the simple beauty of the red-bird cardinal. But were these random interests or lifelong habits Alice Ruth filled with meaning and intent, not just for herself but for each of us to inherit and carry forward?

Because baking sparks and recreates positive experiences and happy memories, using all our senses and focus from beginning to end in creating something meaningful to share with others. Peonies symbolize happiness, romance, happy marriage, honor, prosperity, and good fortune. Pansies represent remembrance and nostalgia, while her beloved cardinal delivers the most precious gift, a message of love sent by those who proceed us and a reminder that God and our dear mother are with us always.

Alice Ruth is survived by her 6 loving children: James (Margarita) McAvoy, Timothy (Maria and Deborah) McAvoy, Mary (Phillip) Schultz, Patrick (Betsy) McAvoy, Alice McAvoy and Bridget (Brian) White.

Her cherished grandchildren: Meghan (Joseph) Esayena, Betsy (Jacob) Staar, Brian (Jessica) Schultz, Timothy (Meghan) McAvoy, Seamus (Antonina) McAvoy, Patrick (Rachel) McAvoy, Brianne Schultz (significant other, Cade Whitaker), Kyle (Grace) McAvoy, Luke McAvoy, Kimberly (Michael) Anderson, Martha (Austin) Prestidge, Abigail Ptaszek (significant other, Corey Denman), Carolyn Ptaszek, James McAvoy, and Lara Rudolph, Alexis (Michael) Schroeder, and Elizabeth White.

Her energetic great-grandchildren: Ace, Adalyn, Aiden, Austin, Colt, Conrad, Emersyn, Emmett, Jacob, Kennedy, Maeve, McKenna, Savannah, and Ellie, Lili, Ryder, plus one more confirmed arrival in 2024.

And 3 siblings and brother-in-law: Ann (Kenneth) Halron, Christine (James) Ogle, Daniel (Jane) Poppelreiter, and Daniel (Jan) McAvoy; many cousins and countless nephews and nieces.

Alice Ruth’s presence will be deeply missed by all whose lives she had touched, but she leaves us all a legacy and roadmap to a life well-lived. May we learn from Alice Ruth’s compassion, kindness, infinite patience, and unconditional love; may she meet us at heaven’s gate to welcome us home again.

In lieu of flowers, a donation made to the National Parkinson’s Foundation (www.parkinson.org) was Alice Ruth’s preference. Thank you for your warm thoughts and prayers, and all memories you may hold for our beautiful and exceptional mother.
